New York Gov. George Pataki has signed into law a ban on over-the-counter sales of ephedra, the Associated Press reported Nov. 3.
The herbal supplement, which is used for weight loss and to enhance athletic performance, has been linked to numerous deaths.
The New York law calls for a $500 fine for each over-the-counter sale of ephedra. The supplement is marketed under such brand names as Stacker 2, Stacker 3, Ripped Fuel, and Xenadrine.
The new law does not affect prescription ephedra.
Illinois was the first state to ban ephedra, and other states are expected to take similar action.
